Monty Python's Flying Circus: Masterpiece of Comedy
by Anonymous

March 16, 2004--John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, and American illustrator Terry Gilliam made up the wacky bunch appearing on the BBC television series and the films that followed.

Possible names for the program included “Owl Stretching Time,” “A Horse, A Spoon and A Bucket,” and “The Toad Elevating Moment.” As planning for the series became more chaotic, BBC management began to refer to the team as a 'flying circus,' inspired by the Red Baron's World War I fighter squadron. The troupe liked the sound of it and randomly added the term Monty Python from their growing list of alternates, and a legend was born.

“Reruns and videos of the show have become a cult favorite, and fans span generations within families. They watch episodes over and over, and know every line by heart, and still they laugh as each time they watch,” said Bill Broadbent of http://TShirtKing.com.

Broadbent is the distributor of a popular line of t-shirts featuring various Python images and sayings that fans of the show love.

“Their King Arthur era spoof, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” is perhaps one of the silliest films of all time. Regardless of how many times you watch you cannot help but laugh at the same silly gags over and over again. In fact, I think I laugh harder each time I see it,” said Broadbent.

One of his most popular Python t-shirts shows the knight from the “Holy Grail” who has his arms and legs chopped off. The knight calmly states: “It’s just a flesh wound.”

"We weren't being satirical because it wasn't the thing that interested us," Jones said. "Ours was a slightly more abstract humor - just being silly really. What satire there is, is more generalized satire."

However, “Monty Python's Life of Brian” satires the rise of organized Christian religion and caused significant controversy, with the film banned in many places in England and the United States. Church leaders accused it of blasphemy, and preachers actively spoke out against it. They warned their congregations to stay away from theaters. The film became an international hit.

"Comedy is about reminding us of the truth of being human: We all have a body and we all must die, and it is okay," said Idle about “Life of Brian.”

Fans of all ages love watching the silly, satirical, irreverent works of Monty Python, a comedy legend that will keep people laughing for generations to come.
